1.                FAO Fellowships 2024 The FAO Fellowship Programme is designed to attract fellows — typically PhD students, researchers, and professors — who have an advanced level of relevant technical knowledge and experience in any field of agriculture, fisheries, or forestry. Fellows will be assigned to supervisors in FAO’s headquarters or its regional, sub-regional, or country offices. Applicants should have a graduate or post-graduate degree, or be enrolled in a PhD program. 2. WRF Watershed and Sewershed Monitoring The Water Research Foundation (WRF) seeks applications for the “Case Studies for Successful Watershed and Sewershed Monitoring and Decision Making” project. Proposers are encouraged to recommend deliverables in alignment with the project objectives and desired outcomes. Applicants may request up to US$150 thousand in funds for this project. 3.            ADB Internship: “Developing Asian Development Banks Strategy on Meaningful Youth Engagement in Water” Youth engagement is integral to ADB. ADB Strategy 2030, Priority 6 ‘Strengthening Governance and Institutional Capacity’ states that ADB will engage with youth as a vital demographic, especially in lower middle-income countries that retain largely youthful populations. The purpose of the internship is to better understand the benefits of meaningful youth engagement (MYE) for operations in Water, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and to support ADB in formulating a clear vision with forward-looking goals and an effective MYE strategy with an action plan. The assignment will involve (i) a mapping exercise of relevant youth and water networks and initiatives in Asia and the Pacific, and its relevance for ADB in terms of objectives, activities and participants; (ii) analysis of meaningful youth engagement strategies of other organisations, such as Multilateral Development Banks, financiers, private sector, etc.; (iii) review and analysis of lessons learned from ADB’s youth activities in the past; (iv) assessment of the benefits and value of meaningful youth engagement for ADBs operations on water; (v) identify potential collaboration areas between Sector Groups Water and Urban Development (SG-WUD), Agriculture, Food, Nature and Rural Development (SG-AFNRD), Human and Social Development (SG-HSD), as well as the Climate Change and Sustainable Development (CCSD) team and the Safeguards team; (vi) Based on activities (i) to (v), support on the formulation of ADBs vision, strategy and action plan on MYE in Water; (vii) present internship results to ADB staff. 4. DAAD Postgraduate Courses in Germany 2025-2026 The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers scholarships to qualified individuals from eligible developing countries for post-graduate studies at German universities in development-related subjects. The program (EPOS) is open to individuals who have completed their previous academic degrees no longer than six years previously; who have at least two years of professional experience; and who are nationals of countries receiving official development assistance (DAC list of the OECD). The available courses range across water resources; renewable energy; land management and tenure; agricultural sciences; forest sciences; ecology; nature conservation; environmental governance; and many others. 5.             Locally Controlled Forest Restoration (LoCoFoRest) Training Program The LoCoFoRest (Locally Controlled Forest Restoration) training program aims to build capacity in national, regional, and local institutions and organizations in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Lao PDR, Nepal, Thailand, and Vietnam. The program will give participants the skills and knowledge to support local communities and entrepreneurs to make forest and landscape restoration scalable. The training consists of a web-based preparatory course, three weeks of training in Sweden, and a project in the participants’ home countries. The application should be made by the individual applicant but needs to be endorsed by an employer. 6. IRASEC Winter School in Social Sciences and Humanities The Research Institute of Contemporary Southeast Asia (IRASEC) organises annually a doctoral winter school, in collaboration with a range of European and Southeast Asian universities and research centres. IRASEC’s winter schools intend to endorse comparative and regional research methodologies, facilitate the interaction of students, and promote co-tutorship and co-supervision of dissertations for early-career researchers in Southeast Asia. Coming from different national backgrounds, the students get to know other academic cultures, while exploring the local specificities of a common theme. In 2024, the IRASEC Winter school will be dedicated to Sustainable Development Studies in Southeast Asia, and will be co-organised and co-hosted by the Faculty of Sociology and Anthropology, Thammasat University and the Center for Integrative Development Studies, University of the Philippines in Diliman. 7. Climate and Labor Film Grant One World Media seeks experienced filmmakers who want to explore, through a short documentary, how climate change is affecting lives and work in the Global South. The film needs to be 25 minutes or less and be completed by June 2025. The successful filmmaker will receive up to £20 thousand in funding for their film. 8. P4G Green Growth and Sustainability The P4G Partnership Fund provides financial support and targeted assistance to public-private partnerships that implement strategies to achieve the following five Sustainable Development Goals: Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture; Water and Sanitation; Clean Energy; Sustainable Cities; and Sustainable Consumption. Start-up projects may apply for up to US$100 thousand, and scale-up projects may apply for up to US$1 million. Projects have to be implemented in a developing country. 9. PAGES Workshops and Educational Meetings Support PAGES (Past Global Changes) supports research aimed at understanding the earth’s past environment to make predictions for the future. PAGES encourages international and interdisciplinary collaboration, including the participation of scientists from developing countries. The program offers funding to qualified organizers of workshops and educational meetings in support of PAGES objectives. 10. Darwin Initiative Grants The Darwin Initiative invites applications for proposals that deliver effective and successful biodiversity conservation as well as poverty reduction projects. Darwin Initiative Capability & Capacity projects may request between £50 thousand to £200 thousand for projects that focus on developing the capability and capacity of national and local organizations. Innovation projects ranging from £10 thousand to £200 thousand must test a novel approach that if proven could scale to deliver results for biodiversity conservation. 11. Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program provides funding to postdoctoral applicants, both nationally and internationally, who will positively contribute to Canada’s economic, social, and research-based growth. A total of 70 fellowships are awarded annually. Foreign citizens who are not permanent residents of Canada may only apply if they hold their fellowship at a Canadian institution. Applicants seek endorsement from a host institution to apply, prepare, and submit an application (Note: institutions may have internal deadlines). Georg Forster Research Fellowship The Georg Forster Research Fellowship supports postdoctoral and experienced researchers from developing and transition countries with their research in collaboration with a host at a German research institution. Nominees must be nationals of a developing or transition country, excluding the People’s Republic of China and India. The monthly fellowship amount is €2,670. 13. The Charles Bullard Fellowship in Forest Research The Charles Bullard Fellowship in Forest Research supports advanced research and study by individuals. The fellowships are generally awarded to individuals in mid-career from all around the world who have established themselves in academia, public service, or the private sector. Research areas include, for example, forest ecology, tree physiology, forest soils, forest resource management, conservation and biodiversity issues, forest land planning, and the arts. The Bullard Fellowship is a residential program and Fellows are expected to spend a substantial portion at either Harvard Forest in Petersham (USA) or at Harvard University in Cambridge (USA). The fellowships carry stipends of up to US$60 thousand, depending on the duration of each fellowship. International researchers receive additional support for the visa process and logistics. 14. ETH4D Student Project Fellowship The ETH4D Visiting Student Grant provides ETH professors funding to invite a student from a low- or middle-income country to ETH Zurich for a research stay of 3-6 months. The invited student must be registered as a Master’s (MA/MSc) student in their home institution. The grant covers the following expenses up to a maximum of CHF 16.5 thousand. 15. JST Research Partnership 2025 The Japan Science and Technology Agency, in collaboration with the Japan International Collaboration Agency, calls for proposals for the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS). Proposals are invited in the following research fields: environment/energy; bio-resources; and disaster prevention and mitigation. The SATREPS program provides funding of approx. ¥ 100 million per project per year. 16. L’Oréal Fund for Women L’Oréal supports organizations in their efforts to help women to get out of poverty. The Swiss Programme for International Research by Scientific Investigation Teams (SPIRIT) The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) offers funding through the Swiss Programme for International Research by Scientific Investigation Teams (SPIRIT) to research projects in all disciplines. Grants should contribute to the education of researchers in participating countries, with a special focus on equal opportunities and the promotion of women scientists. The SwedBio Collaboration Program The SwedBio Collaboration Program contributes to ideas, methods, and policies regarding how biodiversity, ecosystem services, and resilience help sustain livelihoods. 23. Asia Foundation Grants for Environment and Development The Asia Foundation makes grants in a wide variety of program areas, including the Environment. 24. Adaptation Fund The Adaptation Fund makes grants for projects and programs that address the adverse impacts of climate change. Eligibility for grants extends to countries which are Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, with emphasis on developing countries that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change. Grants are primarily to government organizations such as national ministries, development institutes, local government authorities, and others — sometimes in partnership with civil society organizations. Social Innovations for the Developing World The Global Innovation Fund (GIF) welcomes proposals of innovative and cost-effective solutions that address any major development challenge (including energy, water access, agriculture and fisheries) in any country or in multiple countries of the developing world. The program is open to teams and coalitions from social enterprises, for-profit companies, NGOs, government agencies, international organizations, and researchers anywhere in the world. 26. Water Projects for Communities The Coca-Cola Foundation’s priority areas for grant making are women, well-being, and water.
