MT.KH.503 – Principles of Environmental Science

This course attempts to provide an overview of environmental science from a global perspective, i.e. the interactions between humans and the environment, with an emphasis placed upon 4 fundamental principles of environmental sciences: the principle of mass–energy equivalence, the principle of thermodynamics, the evolutionary principle, and the precautionary principle. In addition, the course introduces various ways that the human depends on the earth’s natural resources, and how human activities directly and indirectly affect the earth, and its human and non-human inhabitants.

This course aims to provide quantitative and qualitative methods for conducting meaningful inquiry and research in science as a whole, and in environmental science in particular. Students will gain an overview of research intent and design, methodology and technique, data collecion and management, statistical and interpretative analysis informed by commonly used statistical methods, format and final presentation, etc. The course will also develop the student’s ability to use this knowledge to become more effective researcher in the future. Furthermore, students will work in group through each lesson involved in specific readings and statistics-related tasks on environmental science.

This course deals with application of basic statistic tools to data treatment and analysis, correlation and regression analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) in environmental researches. Data analysis tool of Microsoft Excel is also applied to solve those issues.

This subject will introduce to learners about the basics concepts of climate change, including the overview, the scientific and practical basis for adaptation and mitigation measures, in contact with regional and national practices. After studying this subject, the learners will be improved on their knowledge and experience in responding to climate change.

An overview of forests’ roles in providing products and ecosystems services around the world especially in South East Asia. The criteria and indicators of sustainable forest management, forest policy and regulations are also studied. The purpose of this course is to help environmental Msc. student understand the concept of forest ecology, forest succession, sustainable forest management and the set of activities used to manage those plantation and natural forests. It will also lay the groundwork for understanding and analyzing complex issues related to managing the world’s forest resources. Class activities will examine how biological, physical, and social factors influence forest practices, and forest outcomes include goods, services, and values.

This course aims to introduce the concepts of the Environmental Information System (EIS) and to demonstrate its applications to various aspects of environmental science. The specific content of the course will clarify how to streamline the flow of environmental information from data sources to decision-makers and to provide the necessary analyses that support decision-making in environmental management and protection. We also concentrate on the fundamental issues so that students should gain an understanding of EIS related tools and techniques such as data mining, computer modeling, Global Positioning System (GPS), Web-GIS, and remote sensing. The course will analyze the basic limitations of the system and how to extend its applications in developing countries through a combination of lectures, case studies, tutorial, and class discussions.


MT.KH.512 – Integrated Solid Waste Management

This course differentiates integrated solid waste management (ISWM) concept from conventional solid waste management, with the focus on municipal solid waste. Integrated approach in various stages of waste management system including generation, collection, transfer and transport, and landfill will be introduced. As the core of ISWM, material and energy recovery from solid waste will be focused. The course also discusses about the relation between waste management and climate change, particularly how to inventory and to mitigate greenhouse gases emission from solid waste management practices. Case studies will be introduced for better understanding of ISWM. Field visit will show students the current local waste management practices and the opportunities for ISWM.

MT.KH.515 – Applied GIS and Remote sensing in Environmental Studies

The goal of this course will provide for leaners the foundation knowledge of Satellite Remote Sensing and GIS. The lectures will introduce the current capabilities of satellite imagery processing, spatial analysis and modeling by using Satellite Remote Sensing, GIS and other related technologies. The lectures will give the leaners the fundamental knowledge and hand-on skills in Satellite Remote Sensing and GIS for environmental science studies.


MT.KH.517 – Monitoring and Assessment of Soil, Water and Air quality

The overall objective of this course is to introduce a comprehensive overview on the fundamentals of environmental monitoring (soil, water and air) for master students in environmental science. The course presents the stepwise in the monitoring process, sets up monitoring program, sampling, sample analysis, evaluation and QA/QC of the field and analytical data. The process of monitoring and evaluating the quality of soil, air and water is described in detail. Case studies are provided to illustrate each program for monitoring and evaluating environmental quality with specific objectives. Students will practice some environmental monitoring techniques such as sampling (soil, air and water), field measurement and laboratory analysis.

This course provides for learners a specific knowledge relevant to agricultural and rural environmental pollution control, including agrochemical pollution, agricultural water pollution, agricultural solid waste management, rural craft village environmental pollution, and aquacultural environment. This course will incorporate recent advances in agriculture waste treatment and valuable material recovery in the existing waste treatment technologies. Preventative solutions, modern pollution treatment technologies, and updating pollution control strategies will be focused. Case studies will be introduced for a better understanding of agricultural and rural environmental pollution control.

The course provides the knowledge of water in the continental water and groundwater as a particular type of natural resources related to its various natural and human activities. The focus of the course is to introduce the lessons and principles of integrated management applied in effective water management in the world and to enable learners to relate to the appropriate water management in the country. The overarching view of integrated water resources management which the issues related to water resources needs to be addressed in order to address relevant factors from a comprehensive and holistic point of view. The ultimate goal of integrated management is to achieve harmony in economic, social and environmental development. The course also provides lessons in enhancing international cooperation in the field of water resources, especially the need to develop mechanisms for management, exploitation and use of water resources, information sharing mechanisms for resources management transnational countries.

This course offers a couple of specific lectures on scientific English, which is concerned with terminology structure, scientific sentence structure, pronunciation of environmental terminologies and symbols, etc. A number of readings on environmental issues will be introduced to assist students in improving reading comprehension skill on environmental science, supplementing environmental vocabulary, and increasing environmental knowledge at the same time. In addition, the course contributes to enhance some career supporting skills such as smart lookup for the environmental terminology on the internet; job application, curriculum vitae and business email writing; oral presentation skill; and so on. Some listening skill practices on environmental perspectives will also be provided during the course.
